Overview
The Abhirami Amman Udanurai Amirthagadeswarar Temple located at Selaiyur, Kancheepuram District, Chennai, Tamil Nadu is very equivalent to one at Thirukadayoor, Thanjavoor District, Tamil Nadu. The temple is located around half km before (on the Medavakkam side) the Mutthu Mariamman Temple which is on the main road. A left turn on the main road leads to this temple.
About The Temple
The west facing temple has a small tower. The main shrine houses Shiva Linga named as Amirdhagadeswarar. This shrine faces the east direction.The Goddess Abhirami is found in a separate north facing shrine. Both Amirdhagadeswarar and Abhirami have separate Nandi idols placed in front of their respective shrines. Usually, we don’t find Nandi in front of Goddess in Chennai region.
The niche idols of Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Vishnu, Brahma and Durga are found on the outer wallsof the main shrine. Some of the sub-shrines found in the temple are Ganesha, Subramanya-Valli-Devasena, Ayyappa, Chandikeshwara, Balaji-Padmavathi, Garuda, Hanuman, Surya, Chandra, Navagraha, Natarajar, Bhairava, Nalvar.
A big temple pond is found within the temple complex. The holy tree and few serpent (Naga) idols beneath that are also located within the temple. There are many stucco images of Goddess in different forms located all across the temple.
